Seminars and Workshops

David is an excellent workshop and seminar instructor.
Several topics are available, including:

What Good Jury Slides Look Like
It's been said that God is in the details. So, too, with great jury slides. Each and every element, tangible or not, is important, and each has within it a myriad of details. This extensive slide presentation and discussion will show you what great jury slides look like and how you can get great slides of your own work. The discussion will cover framing, color, resolution, background, shooting groups, and most importantly, lighting. Each element will be illustrated by several examples of actual jury slides.

Spectacular Impressions: Booth Lighting and Design from a Craft Photographer's Eye
David draws on his thousands of hours at craft shows photographing booths and consulting with craftspeople on how to light and display their work effectively for maximum sales. David will teach you how to use light in your booth to capture the viewer's eye and show your work at its best. David will also show you how to use background color to visually isolate and highlight your work; how to create optimal sight lines for drawing people into your booth; why an 'in situ' presentation works best; when and how to use the written word to capture and intrigue potential customers; and more.

How To Work With A Professional Craft Photographer
Working with a professional photographer can be a daunting prospect. David will walk you throught the whole process, from determining what you want and need to communicating those needs to your photographer to what to do if something goes wrong. Handouts include Questions To Ask a Prospective Photographer, a Checklist for Shipping Your Work, and How to Prepare Your Work to be Photographed.
Craft Photography Basics: How To Shoot Your Own Slides
This demonstration/workshop (available both ways) will teach you how to see what the camera is seeing and how to apply the fundamental principles of craft photography to photographing your own work. Topics covered include how to fill the frame and create attention-getting composition, controlling depth of field, choosing the right background, lighting your work (with and witout electricity) to create interest, sources of used equipment and other necessary materials, and more.
David is also a skilled juror, having produced several high quality craft shows, and can help you produce a Mock Jury that will help participants improve both their slides and their presentation.

Craft Photography Breaks Sugarloaf Attendance Record!
In April of 2001 David did a presentation on craft photography as the featured speaker for the Sugarloaf Marketing Club at their Saturday morning meeting at the Sugarloaf Timonium Show. A crowd of 151 enthusiastic people came to hear about using photography to market their work, setting an attendance record for the Club. That was followed with another presentation at the Sugarloaf Fort Washington show, which included a slide show of what great jury slides look like.

AVA Conference Appearance
On March 18, 2000, David spent a delightful day at the Inn at Afton on top of Afton Mountain in the Shenandoah Mountains of Virginia (At the intersection of Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive. Talk abut a beautiful place!) at the Association of Virginia Artisans 9th Annual Conference, "Focus on the Millennium: A Photography Symposium for Artisans".

Nearly 75 craftspeople came to hear all about how to use photography in their business. David presented the What Good Jury Slides Look Like slide/talk, sat on the Mock Jury, and, for the first time in over a decade, set up a studio and made jury slides on location. The participants learned a lot and enjoyed the event, and David I worked with some delightful new clients to produce terrific jury slides.
